Teaching Philosophy & Biography

 Philosophy of Music Education

All students can learn to understand and appreciate music.  One of the keys to success includes connecting the music curriculum to something with which students are more familiar.  Teachers should create a safe, welcoming environment that encourages students to ask questions and explore without consequence.  My classroom philosophy includes “Mistakes are proof that you are trying” to foster student effort.  While creating and understanding music is the most evident goal, the hidden curriculum in a music classroom emphasizes developing the whole person. Participation in music strengthens listening, cooperation, perseverance, discipline, time management, self expression, a sense of duty, responsibility, self reflectiveness, social skills, coordination, and critical thinking skills.  Performing with an ensemble also creates the very important sense of community based on shared experience.  Students, especially adolescents, often need to feel a sense of belonging and that identity can be strengthened in the music classroom.  The goal is to help students grow as citizens and musicians, and to keep music in their lives for years to come.

About Me

I have served as the music director at Keansburg High School in Monmouth County, New Jersey since 2009. I earned a Bachelor's degree is Music Education at the University of Delaware and participated in several music ensembles and student activities, including marching band, drum line, wind ensemble, student theater, and student ambassadors. I completed a Masters' Degree in Music Education Pedagogy from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, CT. I have had the opportunity to study with Mardee Reed-Ulmer, Eileen Grycky, Robert Streckfuss, Suzanne Burton, Heidi Sarver, Jim Ancona,  Joshua Russell, Warren Haston, and Dee Hansen. I currently am growing a music program that includes classes in band, chorus,  and music technology in a 1:1 student technology environment. Additionally, I perform with the Greater Shore Concert Band and as a freelance flautist. As a lifelong New Jersey resident, I enjoy spending time on our beautiful local beaches, but I also enjoy traveling abroad with my family.
